The Xenoblade Chronicles series has become a powerhouse in the RPG world, delivering epic narratives, sprawling worlds, and memorable characters that keep players coming back for more. When Xenoblade Chronicles X debuted on the Wii U, it quickly gained attention for its ambition and scale, pushing the limits of the hardware. Fans have been eagerly awaiting a refreshed experience, and now that it’s finally here does here Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition for the Nintendo Switchlive up to the hype?

A Sci-Fi Adventure of Epic Proportions

At its core, Xenoblade Chronicles X is classic science fiction with a fresh twist. Earth is obliterated after becoming the backdrop for an intergalactic war, forcing humanity to escape into space in search of a new home. After one human colony crash-lands on the alien planet Mira, the survivors must adapt to their dangerous, unfamiliar surroundings. Intriguing themes of humanity, space exploration, and metaphysics underpin the narrative, making it a thought-provoking yet action-packed experience for fans of the genre.

While the central story is gripping, the game’s open-world nature adds a layer of freedom, enabling you to explore at your own pace. That said, the open-world design can sometimes dilute the narrative depth compared to the tighter, more linear approach of other games in the Xenoblade Chronicles series. Regardless, Mira’s vast, alien landscapes are a visual joy to traverse.

What Sets the Definitive Edition Apart?

The Definitive Edition doesn’t just bring the game to the updated console of the Nintendo Switch. It enhances the experience to target more modern players.

  • Visual Enhancements – The updated character models and refined environmental details are noticeable, especially when compared side by side with the original. However, to fully appreciate the world of Mira, docked mode is the way to go. Playing on the smaller handheld screen can feel visually overwhelming at times, particularly during hectic battles. Go big to experience it better.
  • Streamlined Features – Gameplay improvements in this version address player feedback from the original. You can now change the in-game time instantly instead of waiting for the clock to cycle. Additionally, swapping party members has been made simpler, so you no longer need to return to a base to do so. These changes make the gameplay experience smoother and less restrictive.
  • Improved Battles – The battle system also sees enhancements, with the introduction of a “quick recast” feature. This makes combat more dynamic, reducing the downtime between ability cooldowns and keeping the action flowing seamlessly.
  • New Content – For returning players, the Definitive Edition offers new characters, missions, enemies, and narrative elements. With over 20 characters already in the base game, the additions feel pretty substantial. Even if you’ve played the original, this new content provides a fresh reason to reimmerse yourself.

At its core, Xenoblade Chronicles X focuses on exploration and discovery. The vast world of Mira feels alive, with its diverse biomes, alien creatures, and countless hidden secrets just waiting to be unearthed. Whether you’re trekking through lush forests, scaling rocky mountains, or navigating hostile deserts, the sense of scale is felt every step of the way.

Combat is a weird blend of strategy and real-time mechanics, rewarding players for precise decision-making. It’s not my cup of tea, at times I felt like it was trying to blend the two styles without doing eitehr well, but with the introduction of customisable giant mechs it made more sense.

Another fun addition is how the sidequests truly enhance the world-building even further. Completing side missions often reveals deeper insights into Mira’s mysteries and its culture of survival rather than just being there as content fodder like some other titles. It feels worthwhile to do as much as you can.

Why Newcomers and Veterans Should Play

The good news is that If you’re a Xenoblade Chronicles veteran, this Definitive Edition is more than just a revisit, it’s a welcome upgrade. The quality-of-life changes, added content, and visual upgrades breathe new life into the game, making your return to Mira feel fresh and rewarding.

For newcomers, Xenoblade Chronicles X might seem a little intimidating at first, given its sheer scale and unusual combat mechanics. But once you get yourself in the rhythm of exploration, combat, and storytelling, it becomes really hard to put down.

Bang for buck is impressive you’ll likely need 75+ hours for the main story, and well over 100 hours if you’re aiming for completionist goals, I’m not even going to attempt that because I value the relationship with my wife. But every hour does feel like you actually achieve something.

Final Verdict

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition isn’t just a port, it’s a true celebration of one of the most ambitious RPGs in Nintendo history. Its sprawling open world, engaging combat, and meaningful enhancements make it a must-play for fans of the series and general sci-fi fans. For me as a newcomer but fan of “Robotech” and “Mechwarrior” growing up, I was eager to try this out and glad in the end that I did.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Scores a 8 out of 10
