More Tasmanians will be able to become posties, with nation-leading rule changes allowing anyone with a car licence to drive new electric trikes as of December.
Australia Post already has around 90 three-wheelers delivering mail around Tasmania – they’re a big upgrade on the traditional motorbike with room for 100 small parcels and 1200 letters at a time.
“For every Tasmanian candidate who has a motorcycle licence, there are eight who have car licences, so we should be able to fill positions faster from a larger talent pool,” said AP CEO Paul Graham.
“Electric delivery vehicles and electric motorbikes already represent more than half of all postal rounds in Tasmania; they produce zero emissions, no air pollution and make no sound, which locals love.”
Member for Bass and Deputy Premier Michael Ferguson has visited AP’s Hobart depot for the announcement that Tasmania will become the first jurisdiction to implement the relaxed licensing rules.
“There are at least 30 jobs today in Australia Post in Tasmania and the opportunity is there, particularly from December; if you’d like to become a postie, have a car licence and a good driving record, come and apply,” he said.
“Overall, this decision is a win for the environment, a win for delivery times and a win for a more diverse pool of talent in Tasmania.”
