Plans for a health precinct in Burnie promises to improve access to existing health services and bring new forms of care to the community.

The $24 million development, which is currently seeking council approval, would re-purpose unused building at the former UTAS Cradle Coast campus on Mooreville Road.

The facility would house private and not for profit healthcare providers, including potentially a Medicare Urgent Care Clinic, which has been proposed by the Federal Government to be up and running within 18 months, if it is re-elected.

Proponent and Burnie pharmacists Jack Muir-Wilson, says it’s a bit of a no-brainer to set up a Burnie Health Hub and put an unoccupied site, currently owned by the Tasmanian Education Department, to good use.

Mr Muir-Wilson says he’s been working with the department to negotiate a long-term lease as the first step.

He says the proponents are seeking $8 million from both major parties as an election commitment for the up-coming federal election.

The site, which includes 100 car parking spaces, is located close to TAFE Tasmania, Hellyer College, aged care facilities and only two minutes’ drive from the North-West regional Hospital.
