New Coronavirus infections continue to outpace recoveries in Tasmania.
1,728 new cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours, on par with yesterday’s figures.
Public Health is monitoring 8,606 active Coronavirus cases state wide.
4,735 active cases can be found in the South, with 2,088 recorded in the North and another 1,467 in the North-West.
80 Covid-positive patients are in hospitals, with three patients being cared for in the ICU.
784 people are using the COVID@homeplus program.
Health experts say the jump in case numbers is due to sub-variant strains, including BA4 and BA5.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff maintains the numbers are not surprising.
“The increase in cases is occurring nationally as we progress through the coldest months of winter, and the fact that people tend to be socialising more indoors than in the warmer months.”
Vaccination rates are climbing slowly with over half of all kids aged 5-11 years old now fully vaccinated.
63.14% of children in the age group have received their first Covid jab.
Over 72% of Tasmanians 16 years and older have received their first booster.
That figure sits at more than 86% for locals over 50 years old.
“Practice good hand hygiene, follow social distancing, test when you have symptoms and stay home when you are unwell.”
