The Tasmanian Electoral Commission says the election for the Legislative Council seat of Montgomery will be held after the Federal Election, on May 24th.
The election was tentatively planned for May 3rd before the Federal Election was called, but won’t be held on the same date as the Federal ballot.
The Montgomery Electorate takes in Central Coast, Sheffield, Ridgley and most of Burnie.
Sitting Montgomery Liberal MLC Leonie Hiscutt, who is also the Leader of Government Business in the Upper House, will retire at the end of her term and not re-contest.
Although nominations won’t officially open until next Wednesday, several potential candidates have put their hand up, including former Senator Stephen Parry has been nominated by the Liberals, while Dr Darren Briggs has nominated for the Tasmanian Greens.
Central Coast Councillor Casey Hiscutt, who is also the son of the retiring member, says he will run as an independent for his mother’s seat.
Nominations will close on May 1st, with postal voting to close on May 16th.
Voting in the election is compulsory.
