Hillcrest Primary Tragedy Criminal Hearing Underway

The prosecution’s told the Devonport Magistrates Court how witnesses described children falling from an inflatable jumping castle blown 20 metres high into the air at the Hillcrest Primary School tragedy in 2021.

Six children died and three others were seriously injured.

Operator of the castle Rosemary Gamble has pleaded not guilty to failure to comply with health and safety duty.

She’s broken down in tears as witness accounts were read aloud.

The court heard the castle was secured at just four of its eight anchorage points by pegs that weren’t compliant with Australian standards.

Her defence lawyer told the court the manufacturer only supplied the four pegs that were used.
