Big Four bank to open new “regional service centre”

Westpac has announced it will open a branch in Smithton after having no presence in the Circular Head region for 10 years after it closed an agency at the local newsagency in 2015.

It’s come as good news for locals, with the ANZ and the Commonwealth Bank pulling out the region in recent years.

The new Westpac regional service centre, which is set to open next year, will provide face to face support, digital banking assistance, and access to cash.

Westpac says other face to face services will include personal and business lending and fraud and scam support.

The Big Four Bank placed a moratorium on regional branch closures two years ago, now saying work is underway to bring the regional service centre model to other regional locations as well as Smithton.

Westpac still has nine full-time branches in Tasmania, at Burnie, Devonport and Scottsdale, with two in Launceston and four in the greater Hobart area.
