Pets also becoming homeless

Tasmania’s battle with homelessness is seeing cats and dogs winding up in the temporary care of the RSPCA.

State CEO Jan Davis is also finding domestic violence leads to pets needing a home while their owners sort out their living arrangements.

“Our Safe Beds programme has just gone through the roof, we try not to separate people from their animals if we can avoid it, so we actually run an intervention strategy which gives them some time out to look at how they manage it.”

The RSPCA in Queensland is noticing soaring cost of living is causing a sharp jump in animal surrenders, which is suspected to also become evident in Tasmania in the future.
