Tasmania’s Coroner’s office has made a number of recommendations following an inquest into the deaths of two men in separate drowning incidents at the Hobart Waterfront.
Doctor Robert Bo Xu died in November 2019 during a night out, while visiting the state for a medical conference.
Three months later, Jarrod Robert Davies died after being told to leave O-Bar.
Both men drowned – with a coronial inquest examining the role of alcohol in their deaths.
Coroner Robert Webster found that they each died after being served and consuming too much alcohol – to the extent that they were unable to look after themselves.
He’s recommended that out-of-hours licensing conditions be updated to include a requirement for real-time CCTV monitoring, and that there be join initiatives between Tasmania Police, the Liquor and Gaming Branch, and CBOS to conduct regular random spot-checks of licensed premises – and that any potential breaches are fully investigated and prosecuted against.
