The recall is said to affect a total of 7633 cars that were sold between 2020 to 2023.
Toyota has made the recall due to a manufacturing defect that could cause the vehicle’s front suspension to “collapse or detach”.
The recall notice has been issued for two of the popular Yaris models, Petrol (MXPA10) and Hybrid (MXPH10), which were manufactured between 2020 and 2023.
The variants of the vehicles impacted included the Ascent Sport 1.5L Petrol Auto Hatch and Ascent Sport 1.5L Petrol Manual Hatch.
The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts said that small cracks might form in the vehicle’s front lower suspension arms when driving on rough roads.
If cracks appear, it may cause the suspension to collapse or even detach from the car, leading to a “sudden loss of steering control”.
“A loss of steering control could increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users,” the department said.
Customers who are impacted by the defect should expect to be contacted directly by Toyota to book an inspection, and if changes need to be made, they will be done free of charge.
